This book tells big, dramatic stories about the history of the American military. You'll read about the gun battle between black soldiers and white police officers in Houston during World War I, and the mass trials and hurried group execution that followed. You'll get the story of the captured Sioux warriors who were tried by a military commission during the Civil War, men on trial for their lives who didn't speak English and didn't know they were on trial -- until after they were sentenced to death for killing unprotected settlers. And you'll learn about the desperation of the Modoc warriors who ambushed unarmed American soldiers who had come to negotiate with them, another event that led to a flawed trial and the hurried construction of shared gallows.

These are just a few examples of the events I describe. My goal with this book was to ground serious history and a careful exploration of ideas with real storytelling. I put events and people in the foreground.

Alongside stories of the way military courts addressed military conflicts and served the political purposes of the armed forces, you'll read about the way that larger social and political conflicts reached into the world of the armed forces and changed the way military discipline worked.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, for example, flogging was a centerpiece of the way the U.S. Navy disciplined ordinary sailors. When Congress banned naval flogging in 1850, their decision reflected an entirely unrelated controversy: Abolitionists took up brutal navy punishments as a way of attacking slavery, drawing a connection between forms of harsh physical coercion. When Congress voted, the roll call in both houses broke down along sectional lines: Northerners mostly voted to ban naval flogging, while Southerners -- offended by the presence of abolitionists in the debate -- voted against the ban. The American debate over slavery changed the way the navy could discipline its personnel at sea.

For another example, consider dueling. The Articles of War forbade both dueling and a range of associated offenses -- like serving as a second, or challenging another soldier to duel. During the Civil War, the War Department in the North issued regulations expanding the meaning of a "duel" to mean any challenge to fight between any soldiers, including privates.

But the gentlemen officers who served on courts-martial refused to consider a challenge between privates to be part of a "duel." They arrived believing that only gentlemen could actually duel, and only if they went through the correct ritual forms like the appointment of a second. Mere privates and sergeants, not being gentlemen, couldn't challenge each other to duel -- they could only challenge each other to fight to the death, which didn't count. They acquitted defendants who were charged with dueling but lacked the necessary social status to actually participate in the social ritual of the duel, and it didn't matter that War Department regulations said something different. Social knowledge trumped legal regulations.

My favorite Ritchin's book.

I am looking forward to getting my teeth into this book. This was suggested by a professor of mine. Study and ye shall learn.

Photographers certainly know how to simplify their subjects and how to put a frame around a portion of the world so that nothing impinges on their image. However, perhaps because they look at the world through a viewfinder, they sometimes seem to miss not only the larger world around them but the place of their photography in that larger world.Fred Ritchin, who teaches photography at N.Y.U., believes that the method of capturing images changes the world and that the world changes the method of capturing images. In a some times rambling essay, the author looks at various aspects of photography, with an emphasis on the changes wrought by the digital world. On the one hand he decries the easy malleability of the digital image, and on the other sees opportunity for greater understanding through the digital photograph. He explores possible uses of digital media in the future in ways that reminded me of the world of Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash (Bantam Spectra Book)". (The Wall Street Journal recommended reading "Snow Crash" for a view of the future; better hurry up before that book is overtaken by events.)Ritchin complains about the uses of digital media as a means of invading privacy and at the same time suggests that its use can aid humanitarian causes. Although he sees the possibility of either, or both, great benefits and great costs, he does not suggest what photographers can do to direct digital media toward the benefits. Furthermore, after exploring many bold possibilities, he seems to come down for the use of photography on the internet in sites that give the viewer options in how to examine the pictures presented by hidden captions or links of portions of pictures to other sites or similar techniques. It seems a simple direction for a book that aims at lofty goals for digital photography.Ritchin is primarily concerned about the world of documentary photography and ignores the role of the digital in art photography, although I suppose that his interest in websites that present the viewer with options to follow could be bent to artful use as well as documentary.While a well turned phrase is always appreciated, often the author's prose turns purple, or takes a flight of fancy, as when he suggests engaging an image of his long-dead grandmother in conversation.The book is interesting and makes some valid points, but on the whole, it looks like the author had collected notes over the years and decided that no thought could remain unuttered. It will be hard for photographers, viewers and students of media to develop a useful picture of the role of photography in the future from this book.

Ritchin provides great examples of innovative uses of photography with new media today (web sites, artist's projects...) although he doesn't suggest much as to 'what's next.' He lays out important questions about authenticity with regard to digital photography and the 'truth' behind a photograph. He explains what he calls 'hyperphotography' as the new interactive web based format for photographs. I don't know if his idea about scrolling over a photo to 'see more' will catch on but he definitely got me thinking about the potential for new technologies in photography. This was an interesting read and I appreciate the reproduction of some great photographs.

This is a fascinating look at the future of still imaging. I hesitate to use the term photography because photography as we know it is moving toward the same state as oil painting or watercolors. The creation of a still image using silver halides or bleached silver halides and dyes has moved from a mainstream activity to a niche activity performed by wild haired artists with berets and goatees. This book explores that and what it means to the idea that a photograph reflects reality (and delves into exactly what reality is, and how stills reflect differing views of reality).This book is a must read for people interested in the future of still imaging, and interested in shaping and participating in that future.

I enjoy this book. I arrived on time.

I got the book quickly - within a week - and it cost a fraction of what the school bookstore was charging. Not to mention the book came to me in better quality than stated. It's practically new. I will never purchase books at the school bookstore again.

About the Author
Michael Harris has taught in Spain, Bolivia and Colombia. From 1982 to 1992 he taught at the British Institute for Young Learners in Madrid, where he was responsible for setting up the Junior Department (11-14 year olds). From 1992 to 1996 he also taught English at the University of Alcala de Henares. At the moment he is involved in teacher training in Spain and other parts of the world. Michael is the co-author of World Class (Longman, 1994), Worldcup (Longman, 2000) and the new five-level secondary course Opportunities (Longman, 2002 Website: www.longman.com/opportunities). He has also published articles and methodology books on the following topics: Syllabus design; self-assessment: continuos assessment and testing: learner development: oral skills: culture and language learning. Anna Sikorzynska has worked as a teacher and teacher trainer in Poland for fifteen years in various contexts: state schools, private language schools, universities, pre-service and in service teacher training. She also writes and reviews exam materials for the national exam board. She's worked at Warsaw University, English Teacher Training College since 1991, teaching English grammar and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language. Her main professional interest is teaching grammar. This volume focuses on three areas which represent the main cultural and religious divisions of the broader region of Southeast Asia: modern-day Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. In each of these areas, missionaries had to engage with a variety of political and economic systems, social norms, and religious beliefs and practices. They were obliged to consider what adaptations could be made to Catholic ritual and devotions in order to satisfy local needs, and how best to counter local customs deemed inimical to the faith, which obliged them to engage with fundamental questions about what it meant to be Christian. This book is a must if you are a long time collector or someone who wants to check their pocket change for rare coins. Very easy to use has pictures of what to look for and details about markers and the coin. The spiral bound book is really good to use if you are careful it will stay together amazingly. I have ripped the binding on some pages but nothing noticeable.This book and Strike it Rich Error Coins can be your best friend they have so much info between them and tell you how to get a coin question answered or a coin looked at and even lists places that auction coins.

This review doesn't apply to the book itself which contains useful information. However, what good is that when you can't access the information? As a few other reviews have mentioned the binding on this book is horrendous. Even going through and turning every page one page at a time doesn't do anything towards relieving the problem. As soon as a few pages are turned and then you attempt to return to an earlier section you encounter the same problem with not being able to fully open the pages. Well that's if your extremely lucky because in reality the flimsy paper pulled taunt by the binding simply rips much of the time. This review goes to the letter for the other volume as well as it has the exact same issue going on. It's so bad I can't believe that someone got copies of these books during proofing and actually approved this binding design.

I am new to numanistics so I am trying to read as much as I can. This is a two part ( conveniently titled part 1 & part 2) book that put together looks pretty daunting but is well worth it. Other than the fact I wish I had taken one of those Evelyn wood speed reading classes they used to offer when I was younger it is an excellent book and well worth the effort.

I already had the sixth addition (Pt. 1) and it did an excellent job with pennies, nickels and dimes. Unfortunately, a sixth edition by these two gentleman cannot happen, so I opted for the earlier (Pt. 2) covering quarters and halves. The pictures are excellent and make identification easy and grading as well. I highly recommend this book.

Interesting book. The layout and everything is good but the material for binding could be better. Its sightly hard to open and feels a bit tight. Almost reluctant to open. I recommend this for a first coin collector.

It is a great addition to my growing library of coin collecting books. All though the pictures of the coins are not in color, the black and white photos are very detailed so you know what you are looking for.

This book was everything I hoped it would be. An excellent reference! The hard-covered spiral binding was confusing to me, but when I received it, it was perfect for my needs. The spiral binding allows the book to lay open while referencing different coin varieties.
