My favorite Ritchin's book.

I am looking forward to getting my teeth into this book. This was suggested by a professor of mine. Study and ye shall learn.

Photographers certainly know how to simplify their subjects and how to put a frame around a portion of the world so that nothing impinges on their image. However, perhaps because they look at the world through a viewfinder, they sometimes seem to miss not only the larger world around them but the place of their photography in that larger world.Fred Ritchin, who teaches photography at N.Y.U., believes that the method of capturing images changes the world and that the world changes the method of capturing images. In a some times rambling essay, the author looks at various aspects of photography, with an emphasis on the changes wrought by the digital world. On the one hand he decries the easy malleability of the digital image, and on the other sees opportunity for greater understanding through the digital photograph. He explores possible uses of digital media in the future in ways that reminded me of the world of Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel "Snow Crash (Bantam Spectra Book)". (The Wall Street Journal recommended reading "Snow Crash" for a view of the future; better hurry up before that book is overtaken by events.)Ritchin complains about the uses of digital media as a means of invading privacy and at the same time suggests that its use can aid humanitarian causes. Although he sees the possibility of either, or both, great benefits and great costs, he does not suggest what photographers can do to direct digital media toward the benefits. Furthermore, after exploring many bold possibilities, he seems to come down for the use of photography on the internet in sites that give the viewer options in how to examine the pictures presented by hidden captions or links of portions of pictures to other sites or similar techniques. It seems a simple direction for a book that aims at lofty goals for digital photography.Ritchin is primarily concerned about the world of documentary photography and ignores the role of the digital in art photography, although I suppose that his interest in websites that present the viewer with options to follow could be bent to artful use as well as documentary.While a well turned phrase is always appreciated, often the author's prose turns purple, or takes a flight of fancy, as when he suggests engaging an image of his long-dead grandmother in conversation.The book is interesting and makes some valid points, but on the whole, it looks like the author had collected notes over the years and decided that no thought could remain unuttered. It will be hard for photographers, viewers and students of media to develop a useful picture of the role of photography in the future from this book.

Ritchin provides great examples of innovative uses of photography with new media today (web sites, artist's projects...) although he doesn't suggest much as to 'what's next.' He lays out important questions about authenticity with regard to digital photography and the 'truth' behind a photograph. He explains what he calls 'hyperphotography' as the new interactive web based format for photographs. I don't know if his idea about scrolling over a photo to 'see more' will catch on but he definitely got me thinking about the potential for new technologies in photography. This was an interesting read and I appreciate the reproduction of some great photographs.

This is a fascinating look at the future of still imaging. I hesitate to use the term photography because photography as we know it is moving toward the same state as oil painting or watercolors. The creation of a still image using silver halides or bleached silver halides and dyes has moved from a mainstream activity to a niche activity performed by wild haired artists with berets and goatees. This book explores that and what it means to the idea that a photograph reflects reality (and delves into exactly what reality is, and how stills reflect differing views of reality).This book is a must read for people interested in the future of still imaging, and interested in shaping and participating in that future.

I enjoy this book. I arrived on time.

I got the book quickly - within a week - and it cost a fraction of what the school bookstore was charging. Not to mention the book came to me in better quality than stated. It's practically new. I will never purchase books at the school bookstore again.

About the Author
Michael Harris has taught in Spain, Bolivia and Colombia. From 1982 to 1992 he taught at the British Institute for Young Learners in Madrid, where he was responsible for setting up the Junior Department (11-14 year olds). From 1992 to 1996 he also taught English at the University of Alcala de Henares. At the moment he is involved in teacher training in Spain and other parts of the world. Michael is the co-author of World Class (Longman, 1994), Worldcup (Longman, 2000) and the new five-level secondary course Opportunities (Longman, 2002 Website: www.longman.com/opportunities). He has also published articles and methodology books on the following topics: Syllabus design; self-assessment: continuos assessment and testing: learner development: oral skills: culture and language learning. Anna Sikorzynska has worked as a teacher and teacher trainer in Poland for fifteen years in various contexts: state schools, private language schools, universities, pre-service and in service teacher training. She also writes and reviews exam materials for the national exam board. She's worked at Warsaw University, English Teacher Training College since 1991, teaching English grammar and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language. Her main professional interest is teaching grammar. She has written and co-written various books, including exam preparation materials, methodology resource books for teachers and the five-level course for upper-secondary students 'Opportunities' (with Michael Harris and David Mower). This book is a must if you are a long time collector or someone who wants to check their pocket change for rare coins. Very easy to use has pictures of what to look for and details about markers and the coin. The spiral bound book is really good to use if you are careful it will stay together amazingly. I have ripped the binding on some pages but nothing noticeable.This book and Strike it Rich Error Coins can be your best friend they have so much info between them and tell you how to get a coin question answered or a coin looked at and even lists places that auction coins.

This review doesn't apply to the book itself which contains useful information. However, what good is that when you can't access the information? As a few other reviews have mentioned the binding on this book is horrendous. Even going through and turning every page one page at a time doesn't do anything towards relieving the problem. As soon as a few pages are turned and then you attempt to return to an earlier section you encounter the same problem with not being able to fully open the pages. Well that's if your extremely lucky because in reality the flimsy paper pulled taunt by the binding simply rips much of the time. This review goes to the letter for the other volume as well as it has the exact same issue going on. It's so bad I can't believe that someone got copies of these books during proofing and actually approved this binding design.

I am new to numanistics so I am trying to read as much as I can. This is a two part ( conveniently titled part 1 & part 2) book that put together looks pretty daunting but is well worth it. Other than the fact I wish I had taken one of those Evelyn wood speed reading classes they used to offer when I was younger it is an excellent book and well worth the effort.

I already had the sixth addition (Pt. 1) and it did an excellent job with pennies, nickels and dimes. Unfortunately, a sixth edition by these two gentleman cannot happen, so I opted for the earlier (Pt. 2) covering quarters and halves. The pictures are excellent and make identification easy and grading as well. I highly recommend this book.

Interesting book. The layout and everything is good but the material for binding could be better. Its sightly hard to open and feels a bit tight. Almost reluctant to open. I recommend this for a first coin collector.

It is a great addition to my growing library of coin collecting books. All though the pictures of the coins are not in color, the black and white photos are very detailed so you know what you are looking for.

This book was everything I hoped it would be. An excellent reference! The hard-covered spiral binding was confusing to me, but when I received it, it was perfect for my needs. The spiral binding allows the book to lay open while referencing different coin varieties.

This is a realistic memoir of one woman's attraction to the farming lifestyle- and to a farmer- and what happened then.I do wish there had been more focus on the farming and cooking aspects, and less on the relationship issues. The relationship stuff was engaging but not unpredictable, but the farming, and the author's immersion in it, was much more fascinating. As someone who is a dedicated cook, and contemplating doing more farming- I found that spect of much more interest than the romance.Still, a well-written and interesting book!

I grew up in an agricultural community. My family owned a cotton farm they rented out to farmers each season, but I never lived on the farm. As a young girl I did raise ducks and chickens, but in a pen in town. I’ve always held a romantic vision of someday actually living on a farm, having a garden, maybe some horses and chickens.So it was with this idyllic vision of farming that I eagerly read Kristin Kimball’s The Dirty Life, a memoir about establishing a “whole foods” farm with her husband. I learned so much from this book: about farming and about life.There is so much WORK involved in farming and so much RESPONSIBILITY for living things. As Kristin shows us, there are just some things that can’t be put off until tomorrow…like milking the cow despite a heavy snowstorm or planting potatoes during the night in anticipation of a coming rain.Kristin and Mark developed strong working relationships with the animals on their farm and dealt with most every possible situation. Their first milk cow was attacked by dogs, they lost baby turkeys to a weasel, and they had to put their trusted draft horse, Silver, down when he broke his leg. Kristin realized she was truly becoming a farmer when she became less emotional about loss…of an animal or a crop… to death of all kinds. She learned that death is just the other side of life.I was impressed with the determination and work it took to keep weeds out of the vegetable gardens without using pesticides of any kind. I will never choose an organic vegetable over a conventionally raised one without thinking of all the work it takes to make that healthy difference in what we choose to eat.My husband did grow up on a cotton farm, and I have heard him say that farming, simply put, was optimism, turned to despair, turned to prayer. This seems to complement Kristin’s view of agriculture: Farmers toil. Nature laughs. Farmers weep.I realize that my romantic vision of a farm was far from the real thing. I’ve learned what I yearned for was basically a house in the country, with a garden and some pets.Mark and Kristin have truly earned the title of Farmer. I have such admiration and respect for them and for how they have gone about achieving their dream of providing whole food for their family and their community.I loved this memoir.

Way beyond. Kristin Kimball shares with us absolutely fascinating insights into life and living, even spiritual at times, but always aware of the pragmatism of farm life. You can't just stick your hands in the soil and pull a few weeds. You lay face down in a freshly plowed field and embrace the good earth, bury your face in a furrow, and "inhale" that rich living soil. Mind you, she had to metaphorically "jump off a cliff" to get there ... extreme life changes always bring new insights that you can't get any other way, for better or worse. Makes for a very powerful memoir. That's right - "memoir" - not a "how to" book. Kind of surprising that some of the negative reviews lament that fact, but it says "memoir" right on the cover! Truth in advertising.Most of the remaining negative reviews seem to focus on criticisms of the author and/or her life choices. It's because her writing is so powerful that it triggered various insecurities in some of the reviewers. They are not even reviewing the book! Check some of them out, with this in mind, and you'll want to read this even more. I was moved, and most likely, you will be too. I hope she writes more books.

Even though I'm a writer (L.E. Kimball) I'm no relation to Kirstin. The command of the language was fabulous in this memoir and her voice compelling. The story she tells about farming and her relationship with Mark is a page turner. Made me want my own farm. I have 35 acres but off the grid and wooded and in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which wouldn't lend itself well to it--we get about 500 inches of snow. But it made me wish... Nice job, Kristin. You are a fabulous writer.

I love books about returning to the land, urban homesteading, etc. and this is my all-time favorite. I have given my first one away and am ordering another copy which I will certainly end up giving away to a worthy recipient, (knowing that I will have to order yet another one for myself as quickly as possible). Many authors seem to think that, when writing a book about homesteading, every detail of their own psche, relationships, and daily life (buying toothpaste at Target, etc.) is worth including. When I read those books, I usually end up flipping through the book, trying to get to the more interesting parts. Kristin Kimball, on the other hand, did not include one extraneous sentence. And her sentences are those of a true writer. I often laughed outloud and I just as often went back to reread a sentence, savoring Kimball's way with words. Before reading The Dirty Life, my favorite homesteading book was Tim Young's The Accidental Farmer. He too writes very well and makes every sentence count. But The Dirty Life is even better...

I decided to give this book a rating of 5 as I enjoyed it so much, and was not even expecting to like it!!! This book is a memoir of a 30 year old journalist from NYC. She interviews an organic farmer in Pennsylvania and falls in love. Together this city gal and her farmer future husband purchase 500 acres in upstate New York. They begin a CSA farming cooperative, and eventually get married. This novel is packed with every element of what you would want in a good book. A great book about farm life, love, marriage, and such responsibility for living things. Kristin Kimball does a wonderful job of writing about a farmers life, natures ways, the hardship, and the love that is required to run a farm. A beautiful story.
